How To Practice Gratitude (And How It Will Change Your Life)

When you feel stuck, it’s hard to see the beautiful things in life. That’s why it’s so important to practice gratitude on a regular basis.

I’ve written about this before, but I’ve never actually devoted an entire post to gratitude, and I’ve certainly never talked about how I like to practice gratitude. Practicing gratitude has changed my entire outlook on life, and it has therefore changed my life for the better.


7 Ways To Cultivate + Practice Gratitude

  1. Keep a gratitude journal. All it requires is listing some things you’re grateful for every night before you go to bed. This simple strategy helps you reflect on your day in a positive light. You don’t need a fancy notebook or computer program, just a pen and a piece of paper.
  2. Stop complaining. Easier said than done, but when you stop complaining you will notice how much of your energy was going to the negative thoughts. Energy you can now put into positive thoughts!
  3. Include an act of kindness in your life every day. This could be something small like smiling at people as you pass them on the street. Or something big like spending a few hours a week volunteering in your neighbourhood.
  4. See the growth and opportunity in your mistakes. Instead of focusing on what went wrong, recognize that this is a lesson and you’ll do better next time.
  5. Spread some positivity on social media. I love to do this, because social media can be a dark place for some people. Shine a light and share something you’re thankful for in a Tweet or Instagram post!
  6. Thank people on a day to day basis. Make it a point to thank the bus driver, cashier and waitress. These people work long days (often for low wages) and it’s important that they feel appreciated. Your sincere thank you can bring a smile on their face.
  7. When you think about something negatively, try to see the positive in that situation. Make a conscious decision to push the negative thought out of your mind and replace it with something more positive.

The quote ‘be the change you want to see in the world’ is cliche because it’s true. If we all practice gratitude more regularly, the world would be a better place.

  1. I just realized that I have been harboring a lot of negative thoughts about my job lately. If you read a lot of what I write, I complain a lot. I realize that I waste a lot of energy that I would have utilized doing better things. Please add the other five, you said 12. Maybe I get another thing dragging me behind.


    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Complaining comes natural to us but you’re right that is wastes precious energy. Sorry by the way it said ’12’ it’s supposed to say 7! I changed it a few times from my phone but it seems to have failed saving it. Thanks for pointing that out!
