How To Deal With Negative People: 3 Strategies

I’m one of those annoying (haha) people that has made the conscious decision to me more positive. I try to wake up with a positive mindset every day. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I share that mindset there too!

But every once in a while, I come across someone thats just negative. Their glass is always half empty and it doesn’t matter what you do or say, you can’t make them look more positively at things. That sucks, for you but also for them, but when you are in a situation where you have to deal with this person every day (at work for example) their negativity can end up affecting you.

Here’s what has helped me in the past:

Resist the urge to judge them

Judging negative people is so easy, but you’re better off not to. She’s a bitch. He’s a jerk. He’s ungrateful for what he has. They don’t deserve to be judged, because you don’t know their story. And even if it seems unlikely that they will wake up one day and think differently, we have to remember that the possibility is there.

Instead, try approaching them with the positive mindset you wish they had and expect the best in them. You never know what might happen. 

Stay detached from their negativity

Smile and don’t say anything. This tactic usually works the best for me when I’m in a more professional environment, or when I can’t be bothered to say anything. I force myself to be completely detached from their negativity and do not let myself be affected by it. While their tirade goes on, I think to myself ‘yeah, but this doesn’t affect me because my outlook on these things is different.’

Some negative people are just seeking a reaction from you, they feed off of people that agree with them and add to their own negativity. Try to be an observant, rather than be emotionally invested in whatever they’re talking about.

Ask yourself what you’re getting out of it

Are you getting something out of these conversations? This relationship you have with this negative person? Questioning yourself helps you change the way you respond to this person. Sometimes we keep up with negative relationships because it makes us feel needed or it gives us an excuse to gossip. To be completely free of negativity in your life, you need to limit these interactions as much as you can.

It’s often not possible to completely cut negative people out of our lives – especially if we work with them or if they’re family members. But you can change your response and the way you deal with them. This way, it’s still possible to delete as much negativity out of your life as you possibly can.

  1. I recognized that I often see ways of doing things that I think could be improved and that others hear this as either criticism or negativity. So, I have consciously worked at being more positive and accepting of situations and people. I must have succeeded, because a person I met recently actually complained that I always said good things about everyone. She tends to gossip, so I guess my pointing out something good about people each time really frustrated her! Being quiet like you suggested is probably the best response.

  2. I had to deal with this last September. A guy from school that I’ve known for a few years is always such a negative person and every time we hung out I found myself completely exhausted and annoyed. Though my friends list is already too small, I made the choice to distance myself from him because I couldn’t take it anymore.

    1. Sounds so familiar! This has happened to me before as well. Someone being negative is one thing, but when they are taking away your own energy, it is indeed better to distance yourself from them. Thanks for your thoughts!
