How To Overcome Perfectionism: 4 Habits That Will Help You

I remember those nights in college where I would stay up until 4AM to really perfect that research paper I had to hand in the next day. And then, after spending way more time on it than I should have, it still wasn’t perfect in my eyes.

I suffered from a severe case of perfectionism, and it took me a long time to overcome that. It held me back in my life and felt like it was stealing my time. But it was just so hard to let it go. *breaks out into song*

There are a few different things that helped me overcome perfectionism, and I want to share those with you in this blog post.

Approach it with a different mindset

When you approach something with the mindset of ‘it has to be good enough’ instead of ‘it has to be perfect’ your urge to make it perfect will not be as strong. I’m not saying it won’t be there, but in my experience it won’t be as strong.

Don’t use it as an excuse to slack off, but do try to find balance. The only way you can find that balance is through trial and error and a lot of mini-meltdowns (I’m speaking from experience).

Accept that you are flawed and so is everyone else

You’re human. You have flaws. That’s perfectly fine. Things don’t always go as planned because life happens. You can still improve things. If you get rejected, it’s not because you’re not good or perfect enough, it’s because you’re human and that’s okay.

This takes time, and it’s important to ‘check your mind’ every time you are criticising yourself for not being perfect – instead of beating yourself for not being perfect, remind yourself that it is okay to have flaws as long as you work to improve them. 

Only compare yourself to yourself

I dedicated an entire post to help you stop comparing yourself to others, and I want to touch on that again here. Comparing yourself to others on a regular basis can easily bring you down and make you feel like you’re not good enough. Instead, compare yourself to yourself. Are you trying to be a better person than you were yesterday? How have you improved?

Focus on that, and appreciate the progress you’ve made, even if it’s just in the small things.

Shape the environment around you

How many self-help blogs, podcasts, TV-shows and magazines do you read that reinforce the idea that you have to be perfect? I’m going to tell you right now that you don’t need that stuff in your life.

Reducing the sources that try to reinforce perfectionism on you can drastically change your viewpoint. Instead, spend more time with the sources that life you up and support you.
