We’ll be forever nineteen, somehow

I remember the hot summer sun. That red Mustang. And you and me driving with the windows down.

I remember smiling in the passenger seat and thinking those aviators made you look a bit James Dean. I remember you said something to me, but I didn’t hear what. We had turned up the radio way too loud.

And I remember that I had never felt so happy. So free. As the California palm trees flashed by and the sun was slowly setting, making beautiful shadows on the road in front of us. All I wanted was to stay in that moment forever. Time standing still. Never having to worry about anything.

Next week I’m saying goodbye to my teenage years forever. But I will never say goodbye to these memories. They’re ingrained in my mind forever, and that’ll be what being nineteen will mean to me for the rest of my life.
